Khaajah Azeezul Hasan Majzoob – The Turning Point

Out of good fortune, precisely during that time, a Khalifa-e-Khaas and Aashiq-e-Saadiq [Special Deputy and True Lover] of Moulana [Thanwi], was a sub-inspector of schools in Lucknow – Khaajah Azeezul Hasan Ghauri by name. He was a BA graduate of Aligarh and his nom de plume was Majzoob. His character and temperament were half-majzoob like. [In other words, he sometimes seemed to be emotionally out of control.] However, by virtue of the spiritual grace of his Murshid he became a Saalik [that is he became a sober disciple of Tasawwuf and did not lose control over his spiritual state].

One day, taking along my old companion, Haji Zafarul Mulk Bahadur, we went to him [Khaajah Azeezul Hasan Saheb]. I examined him for some time. The impression of Hazrat Thanwi in my mind was not feint. Now it became more deeply engraved. The decision was taken to write a letter to Moulana and to tell him all about myself; to tell him my story in my own words.

My trust in him [Hazrat Thanwi] intensified, but it was not blind. My wrongs were also in front of me, as well as the addressee being a human being. The political differences, particularly opposing the Khilaafat Movement were thorns pricking my flesh. My mind explained that I should leave it to him to prescribe a spiritual practitioner for me. Where will I find a more insightful person than him?

My mind did not say: “Close your eyes and give your hand to him.” I was thinking of Moulana Husain Ahmad Saheb. I knew his political stance well. I was afforded the opportunity of his personal company for some time. I experienced his association in the jalsahs of the Khilaafat Committee and during travels, etc. on more than one occasion. He was matchless in his humbleness, down-to-earth nature and service to creation.

Then there was the famous scholar and muhaddith of the country, Moulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri. He was unmatched in his encyclopaedic knowledge. A few other Buzrugs from the Deoband circle were also in my mind.
