1.5 Temperament

His temperament was sanguine – having blood as the dominant humour – with hotness. Evidence for this were the red streaks in his eyes, his beautiful and well-built physique and the equilibrium in his actions. His hot-bloodedness was partly natural, as it is the demand of a sanguine temperament.

Another cause of this hot temperament was that in the prime of his youth a physician gave him a prescription of a certain medication which increased his natural body heat. For this reason, he was fond of consuming things which produced a cooling effect, and he found such food and drink beneficial.

Then Zikr-e-Ilaahi [engaging in verbal remembrance of Allah Ta’ala] and the vigour of Muhabbat-e-Khudaawandi [Love for Allah Ta’ala] intensified the heat. However, in view of the heat not being an anomaly, rather it was also the essence of the natural body heat, it did not produce a dry state. In fact, it produced exquisiteness in his disposition, physical strength, sound perception, correct thinking, lustre in the physical senses and balance in his actions.
