Hazrat’s ResponseThe response came:“1. I did not ask about the purpose of bai’t. I asked you the yardstick by virtue of which determining a Shaikh would be easy. I repeat myself: ‘What is a Shaikh-e-Kaamil [accomplished Shaikh] in your mind?’2.1, 2.2 I hereby inform you faithfully that I am not in this calibre.2.3 This is merely an assumption. It is possible that the assumption proves to be incorrect.2.4 This is possible through correspondence as well.2.5 The qualification of “beautiful” is likewise just an assumption. [In other words, the correspondent has merely presumed that the sayings and statements will be beautiful.]2.6 Listen to me the contrary. My life is pathetic. Now what report are you going to take to be true?2.7 I have submitted to you the product of “experience” without any trouble. [In other words, “You have been apprized directly of my practical life. Now what constrains you to come to Thanabawan?”]
Moulana [Thanwi] was not just a Soofi; a mere Aarif; only a Zaahid [ascetic]. He was a Mutakallim [Scholastic – master of Islamic philosophy] as well as a Ma’qooli [logician]. Above everything else he was a Muslih [spiritual reformer] and a Mu’allim [Teacher of Deen]. This much correspondence was sufficient to understand all that. After this second response it required some courage to continue the correspondence. Hence, communication discontinued and remained suspended for quite some time. |
